Introduced at the beginning of 2003, the Aluminum G4 came in just two versions, 12-inch and
17-inch. Both models had Airport Extreme®, Gigabit Ethernet, modem, USB, FireWire, headphone
and microphone ports. The 12-inch model had a 867MHz processor, VGA out, and CDRW/DVD drive
(SuperDrive® optional), while the 17-inch model had a 1GHz processor, DVI, SuperDrive®,
backlit keyboard, Bluetooth® Cardbus®, and a FireWire 800 port.
Late in 2003,four new models were introduced. These models had all the features of the previous
models plus DVI, USB 2.0 and built-in Bluetooth® were standard. The 12-inch model was upgraded to
1GHz (12-inch DVI); two 15-inch models were introduced at 1.0 and 1.25 GHz (15-inch FW800);
and the 17-inch 1.33GHz. Other standard features included: CardBus® (all except 12-inch), and
SuperDrive® (optional on 1GHz models). The 1.25 and 1.33 GHz models also had a backlit keyboard.
The line was again upgraded in April of 2004 and renamed the PowerBook G4 Family. The 12-inch
model was then 1.33GHz, and has optional SuperDrive®. The 15-inch model came with a 1.33 or 1.5GHz
processor; and the 17-inch model clocked in at 1.5GHz. All models came standard with Airport, Bluetooth,
and USB 2.0; Backlit keyboard was standard on the 1.5GHz models (optional on the 15-inch 1.33GHz).
In early 2005, the 12-inch model became 1.5GHz, and has an optional SuperDrive®.
Two 15-inch models were upgraded: one at 1.5GHz with optional Superdrive®; the other at 1.67GHz and SuperDrive®
standard. The 17-inch model moved to 1.67GHz with SuperDrive® standard. Other standard features included Airport, Bluetooth, and USB 2.0; Backlit keyboard and Cardbus®
was standard on the 15 and 17-inch models.
Late in 2005, the final upgrade to the Aluminum line added a Dual-Layer SuperDrive®, and high resolution diplays on
the 15-inch (1440x960) and 17-inch (1680x1050) models.
