The original iBook® (clamshell), introduced in July of 1999, came with a 12.1-inch TFT
SGA (800X600) LCD, 300MHz G3 processor, 32 or 64 MB of onboard RAM, 4MB of Video RAM, 10/100 Ethernet,
Airport® slot, 56 kbps modem, single USB® port, Headphone jack, CD drive, and was offered in
colors of Blueberry or Tangerine. Shortly afterward, a Graphite/Translucent Special Edition (SE)
version was introduced which had a 366MHz processor.
In September of 2000, the FireWire iBook® was introduced. In addition to the earlier
features, it had a 366MHz processor, single Firewire® port, video output, and color
choices of Lime, Indigo, and Graphite/White. Shortly thereafter the Special Edition (FireWire)
iBook was introduced which was Graphite/White or Lime and had a 466MHz processor and DVD drive.
These were the last of the clamshell type iBooks.
In May of 2001, the Dual-USB iBook® (all white - IceBook?) was introduced. This model
was only offered with a 500 MHz processor (66MHz Buss) and a 12.1-inch XGA (1024X768) LCD. New
features included 64 or 128MB of onboard RAM, 8MB of VRAM, Dual-USB ports, Built-in Microphone, VGA
output, and an optional DVD or CDRW drive. Other features were the same as the original iBook.
In October of 2001, the Late 2001 iBook® was introduced. The only significant difference
between the Dual-USB and this model was 128MB of onboard RAM was standard, an optional 600MHz (100MHz Buss)
Processor, and an option for a Combo (DVD/CDR) drive.
In January of 2002, the optional 14.1 LCD iBook® was added to the line. Standard
features on this model included a 600MHz processor and a Combo drive. Other features were identical
to the 12.1-inch iBooks.
In May of 2002, the entire line was upgraded, and included the 16 VRAM, and 14.1
LCD 16 VRAM iBooks. Options for these models included 600 or 700MHz processors,
CD, CD-RW, DVD, CDRW/DVD combo, and 12.1 or 14.1-inch LCD.
In November of 2002, the line was again upgraded with three new versions (Opaque 16 VRAM,
32 VRAM, and 14.1 LCD 32 VRAM). These models had 700 or 800MHz processors, 128MB of
onboard RAM, and a CD or Combo drive. While earlier iBooks had clear plastic with a white inner
coating, these models' case parts were an opaque plastic.
The next upgrade was in April of 2003, and was referred to as the Early 2003 iBook®.
These three opaque models were a 12.1-inch 800MHz CD only, a 12.1-inch 900MHz CDRW/DVD, and a
14.1-inch 900MHz with CDRW/DVD. All three models had 128MB of onboard RAM, and 32MB of VRAM.
In October of 2003, the iBook G4 was introduced. The three G4 models offered were a
12-inch at 800MHz, a 14-inch at 933MHz, and a 14-inch at 1GHz (133MHz Buss). All three models had
slot loading CDRW/DVD combo drives, 128MB onboard RAM, Airport Extreme® (optional), and
Bluetooth® (optional). Other features are identical to the earlier model.
In April of 2004, the line was upgraded and renamed to iBook G4 Early 2004. The three
models offered were a 12-inch at 1GHz, a 14-inch at 1GHz, and a 14-inch at 1.25GHz. SuperDrive was
optional on the 14-inch models. All models had 256MB of onboard RAM.
In October of 2004, the iBook G4 Late 2004 was introduced. The three available models
were a 12-inch at 1.2GHz, a 14-inch at 1.2GHz, and a 14-inch SuperDrive model at 1.33GHz. All model
came with Airport Extreme®; other features are identical to the iBook G4 Early 2004 version.
The current line, the iBook G4 Mid 2005, was introduced in July of 2005. The two
basic configurations are a 12-inch Combo Drive at 1.33GHz, and a 14-inch SuperDrive at 1.42GHz.
Both versions come with 512MB of RAM. Other features of this model were the same as the previous
model.

All iBooks are harder to work on than the PowerBooks. Airport® cards, RAM, and keyboards
are user installable, but most other repairs require major disassembly. Few parts are
interchangeable between the various models.
